Mar 22, 2011 5,343 54 37,690 5 Completely different sockets so you're also changing out your motherboard at the very least. If you have DDR3 RAM, then you can use it with the new motherboard. Odds are though, your RAM is DDR2 and will also need to be replaced as DDR3 support was not added until very late into the Core 2 series' lifespan. 6 [quotemsg=13383157,0,563146][quotemsg=13380837,0,1472522]Yes, as long as the motherboard supports a new cpu, and if the cpu supports your RAM. That statement implies that an i3 or better can be inserted into the current motherboard the OP did state "without changing motherboard." In addition your phrase "new cpu" is ambiguous, an individual may believe it to be a brand new Core 2 Duo/Quad, or other processor. I'm not "hating" on you, facts need to be made clear in my opinion. Similar threads Advertising Cookies Policies Privacy Term & Conditions Just to set expectations, there is absolutely no way that you can use any Intel Core i3/i5/i7 processors with this board. Considering the processor that you already have, your only choices for a significant performance upgrade are going to be an upgrade to one of the Intel Core 2 Quad processors. Now, the Intel Core 2 Quad processors require additional power. You need to ascertain, from the manufacturer of the motherboard, whether this motherboard has the capability to provide this additional power and, if so, which of the Intel Core 2 Quad processors are supported by the motherboard's BIOS. Note also that it sometimes requires a BIOS upgrade to enable this support - and, this BIOS upgrade must be installed BEFORE you remove the existing processor. If you cannot upgrade to an Intel Core 2 Quad processor, there is really nothing that you can do to improve the performance of this system. It will be time to upgrade the entire system to something more modern. Considering how old this system is, you have many processor generations to pick from - but go for the latest that you can. Most laptops are not upgradable to the extent you ar looking at. We would need the exact model to tell you what your upgrade options are. Or better yet, call the people who made it Toshiba and ask them. They can provide more details, including exactly what CPUs are compatible with the motherboard and BIOS in that machine. If you would like to play games on a laptop you will need to buy a different laptop. There are many laptops suitable for playing many games on at very good to ultra graphics settings. 2 No, you cannot. For either component.
